Mattie's Broken Arm...

It's a green one!
Well, I definitely jinxed myself with this one. Literally, two days before Matthew broke his arm, I was telling one of my friends that I wanted to switch HMO groups so that when, not if, Matthew breaks a bone, I can take him to the Orthopedic physicians I work with.
So....two days later, as I was nursing Jacob, Matthew disappears into my room and after a few seconds of silence, I run into my room to check on him. Well, all Matthew wanted to do was turn my TV on. No big deal, right. And then, the little bench Matthew had climbed upon went right out from under him. I tried to catch him, but it was too late. As I watched the fall happen in slow motion, I knew the second his arm made contact with the floor, that he probably was going to do some damage. And, he did.
After a few minutes of crying, he actually fell asleep on my bed. So, I let him sleep for about an hour, hoping he would feel better when he woke up. Well, no such luck. After examining his arm, I was pretty much one hundred percent sure it was broken. So, off to the ER we went.
After amazing service in the ER (VIP is always a plus), it was confirmed that Matthew had a distal radius torus fracture. Yes, just what I thought. Working as an Orthopedic Nurse Practitioner does have its advantages, especially when you're a mom of two boys. I don't think this will be our last trip to the ER for a broken bone.
At the ER, Matthew's arm was placed in a splint. Luckily, I know a few good Ortho docs. A few days later Matthew got to go see Dr. Schlechter, who put him in a fun green cast.
Matthew has adapted to his cast quite well. It has been a little bit of a challenge during meal time and bath time. It has also been difficult to keep Matthew quiet. What a joke!!!
Matthew gets his cast off next week. We are a little nervous because we don't want him to re-fracture his arm. So, once again, we will be watching him like a hawk.
