Mattie is Two Weeks Old Today!

I cannot believe our little son is already two weeks old today! The time is just flying by. Mike and I have enjoyed every day with him and we cannot even imagine our lives with out him. He just makes life so much more meaningful and complete. Everything else just seems to pale in comparison. We can hardly believe how much he has changed. And, he is becoming such a big boy already. I love that he is more alert now. He just captures my heart when I hold him on my chest and he holds his head up to look at me. We just cannot get enough of our Mattie boy.
Auntie Tina with Mattie. This is his favorite position to be held!

Mattie Sleeps....

So, because Mattie is a newborn, he likes to breasfeed about every two hours. He really does not have a problem sleeping...in his car seat that is. The fact that he eats every two hours just makes for a long night for him mommy. So, because Mikey & I had a "hot date" last night, I left my mom with 4 ounces of breastmilk. Apparently, Mattie downed all of it, leaving him very satisfied. This could not have been a bigger blessing for me, because I was EXHAUSTED when we got home last night. Well, "Sleeping Beauty" slept for six hours straight! This is unheard of. So, tonight...guess what I am going to do??? I am going to pump a large volume of breastmilk and let him go to town. I don't want to get too excited, because this whole sleep stretch thing was probably a fluke. But hey, it's worth a try and mommy is desperate for some much needed Z'ssss!

The Infamous Bassinette

So, this is "Daddy's Little Wingman" in his basinette. He looks happy here...but don't let him fool you. Mattie HATES his basinette! He hates lying flat on his back...Not sure why, but he just hates it. This has been such a challenge for Mike & I because we obviously want him to sleep in it. So, in my desperate, delerious state early in the morning after no sleep, I finally give in and put him where he wants to be...In his car seat. I don't get it, but it works. I asked his pediatrician if this was okay, and she said to do whatever works. Of course, he would sleep if I held him all night, but that's not going to work either. Keep your fingers crossed that Mattie will one day become "one" with his basinette.

Our First Night Out!

Mikey and I had a "hot date" last night. Our friends, Jeremy and Alma got married. Unfortunately, we were unable to make the ceremony because we did not want to leave Matthew for too long. However, we were lucky enough to go to their reception. Grandpa Lloyd and Grandma Carole got to watch our Mattie Boy. I was a little hesitant to leave my little man, but I must admit, it did feel very good to get out of the house. I have not left his side since his birth. I also had my first beer last night in over ten months...Wow!!! That was one good beer. When we arrived home, it was nice to hear that Mattie did take a bottle of breastmilk from my mom. I was really worried he was not going to take a bottle, so this is a good thing. And, he was sound asleep in my mom's arms. What a fun and much-needed evening!!!

Time Flies!

Little Mattie is already eleven days old today. Where does the time go??? We have really enjoyed watching him change and grow everyday. Today I discovered that he loves music. I put some John Mayer on while I was cleaning the house today. His eyes lit up and he actually stayed awake for about a half an hour, which is a lot for my little guy, considering all he really does is sleep and eat.

First Doctor's Appointment

Matthew had his first appointment with his pediatrician, Dr. Rees on Monday, July 14, 2008. Everything went very well and we just love his pediatrician. It is also so nice that her office is very close to our home, which is always convenient with a newborn. Mattie did so good...He did not even cry. He has been doing a lot of eating, apparently, as he has already gained five ounces. He now weighs 8 pounds, nine ounces, and is now twenty-one inches long. What a relief to have a healthy son.
Tasha and Baby Mattie! So cute!

Proud Grandma Carole!

His first car ride...Coming home from the hospital. He just loves his carseat and his binky!

The Ritter's surprised us with a welcoming stork when we arrived home from the hospital. So cute!

Look at those cheeks!
Mommy and daddy love you!

Our New Family!

This picture was taken right after Matthew's delivery. What an amazing day! Thank you God, for bringing our son safely into this world!

Happy Birthday Matthew Ryan Finston

So, I promised I would update everyone on the effectiveness of my walk....Well, it worked!!!! I started going into labor in less than an hour after arriving home from my walk. Mike & I laid down to watch TV. I was finishing my dessert from the evening...and, I started having contractions...They began about 8 minutes apart, which I really thought nothing of, because I have been having random contractions all along. I was very tired so I tried to go to sleep. Well, sleep was not happening. The contractions got more and more intense. They were not unbearable, but I was definitely uncomfortable. After about an hour or so, the contractions began happening regularly at 5 or so minutes apart. I thought..."Is this really it? Am I really in labor". I told Mike to go lay on the couch and get some sleep, just in case this was the "real deal". After lying in bed for about five hours, I decided to wake Mike up. I decided it would be a good idea to get to the hospital, as I was getting more and more uncomfortable. Mikey took a shower, and off we went to St. Joseph Hospital at the lovely hour of 4 AM. When we arrived, I felt like a celebrity. Dr. Anzaldo, my OB doctor, had apparently told all of the L & D nurses about me..How I am a nurse at CHOC, etc. EMBARASSING!!! I got the full on V.I.P treatment. The unit was really slow that night, so I must have had four nurses help me. I told them that "I thought I was in labor, but I was not sure". Well, they checked my cervix and, surprise, I was already dilated to a four. After about two more hours, I decided it was time to get my epidural. I was getting very exhausted and my body was beginning to shake. After receiving my epidural, my body relaxed so much and I was able to get the much needed rest my body and mind deserved. At 7 AM, it was change of shift and the day shift, Ellen, came in to introduce herself, as well as to check my cervix. I was dilated to 8 cm. YIPPEEE!!! I labored for about four more hours and Ellen, my nurse, made sure I was very comfortable. At around 11:30, I told her that I was having a lot of pressure. She checked my cervix again, and I was dilated to 10 cm and the baby's head was crowning. She called Dr. Anzaldo and he said he would be there in about 20 minutes. Well, 20 minutes later, Dr. Anzaldo arrived....Four pushes later, at 12:14 PM, our precious son, Matthew Ryan Finston was welcomed with open arms into this world. My mom, Mike, & Kara were present during his delivery. They all helped to make the pushing part of my labor very bearable. The coolest thing about my delivery was when I pushed Matthew out and Dr. Anzaldo told me to reach down and grab him. I got to pull Matthew out the rest of the way. He was then placed on my chest, where he stayed with me for about an hour. I cannot even begin to describe the intense emotions that filled the room that day. It is a day I will never forget. Matthew Ryan weighed 8 pounds, 4 oz, and was 20 inches long. Mike & I are so blessed to have a healthy boy. We are so in love and cannot imagine our lives without him! We are so glad you are here, Matthew!!! We love you!!!

Happy Fourth of July!!!

So, today is my official due date. I wanted to get a good belly shot in, as this may be my last one. Kind of sad....But, I cannot wait to meet our little man, so I think I will get over it. If I do not go into labor this weekend, Dr. Anzaldo will have to induce me on Monday. My fetal non-stress test on Friday went well. Dr. A wanted to play it safe over the weekend to make sure our little man was not getting himself into any trouble. Everything looked great, which of course, is always reassuring.
I also received a suprise knock on the door last night. It was my sister-in-law, Kelly. She flew out from Ohio to visit, in high hopes to see her nephew be born. She was able to go with me to the fetal testing facility. We had a great time. She made me laugh and was able to see Baby Finston. The nurse did an ultrasound, and my little man was showing off his package. Kelly and I said simultaneously, "he has huge balls"!!!! So funny!!! Good to know my little man is a "manly man". It was so great to see Kelly over the weekend as well. We went to my in-laws for a BBQ. It was nice to relax and enjoy everyone's company. And, in hopes to get my labor started, Kelly walked with me back home from my in-laws....Effectiveness of the walk..hmmm! I will keep you all posted!

40 Weeks Pregnant - What is going on???

So, I had my 40 week OB check on Wednesday, July 2nd with Dr. Anzaldo. Of course, still not real signs of labor. Just a ton of Braxton-Hicks. I have been walking, eating spicy food, having my feet rubbed...No suck luck! With only two days until my due date, I am just kind of wondering..."what is going on"??? My OB appointment went well. Mike was able to go with me, which is always nice. Dr. Anzaldo checked my cervix. Still no real progess. I am still dilated to approximately 1 1/2 cm with very little effacement. Dr. A did do an ultrasound. Our little man is not so little. He weighs approx. 8 1/2 pounds. Dr. A also said that his head is not putting pressure on my cervix, meaning that my cervix will have a difficult time dilating. Because the holiday weekend is coming up, Dr. Anzaldo wanted to play it safe and send me for a non-stress test on Friday. He said if I do not go into labor by Monday, that he will schedule an induction for that day because he does not want the baby to get any larger. So, here I am...waiting for our little man. I am trying to enjoy the last few days of pregnancy, but my poor mind is just so pre-occupied by when our little man is going to get here. Hurry up little man...Mommy and daddy cannot wait to FINALLY meet you!
